I just couldn't help it.

It is February and the temptation to start planting some seeds is very great. I've been holding off and holding off but today I succumbed. I wasn't going to but then my father told me that he had planted a few and that was enough to break my will.

I didn't plant many (compared with the hundreds of seeds I will be planting this year) but I have been itching to use my new electric propagator (Christmas present) so I chose some of the seeds that suggest January-March as the sowing time. I will have an awful lot of seeds to sow come March so decided it would be good to get a few under way to lighten the load (see how I justify it).

Sitting on my bedroom windowsill.

It's a dinky little thing and costs a tiny amount to run as its actual heat is so tiny, it barely even gets warm to the touch, the seven little chambers are a good size to get a decent batch of seeds in.

I have sown geums, chrysanthemums, echinacea,  a couple of free varieties of sweet peas, digitalis and one other thing which I have forgotten already. Once they have germinated and grown a bit I hope to transplant them freeing up the propagator for the next batch in a few weeks.

Maybe I am too early, who knows, who cares. It brought me a bit of Wintry pleasure for a Saturday afternoon and that is worth plenty.

  1. I think if I were to plant any seeds in my windows right now, they would look out and see the FOOT of SNOW on the ground and Drop Dead right there and then! LOL!

I give you credit though, you are a Brave Man!

  4. I planted a few sweet peas in an old ice cream carton out in the unheated conservatory and they are just poking through so yours should get off to a good start if they are warmer than mine! It's great to see new life coming through - I hope all your seeds germinate for you.

  5. I`m still holding off with any sowing. I`ve bought some seed compost a few weeks ago but haven`t had the urge to sow anything yet as the weather here is dreadfully wet and windy. I`m not even considering it until first week of March. I`m not a flower grower, but I`m looking forward to starting a few tomatoes and cabages off. I`ll also be sowing some radishes outside, soon.

  6. Good man, I'm glad I'm not alone. I sowed my chilli pepper seeds on the last day of Jan and the first few have just started to emerge. Makes it feel as if spring is just around the corner.

  8. Well, you beat me to it, I have resisted planting any seeds until now despite the mild weather, but I am itching terribly…I try to hold off to 1st of March, then I am doing the whole lot, inside and outside!

  9. You've beaten me to it too, but now I'm off to find my old - about 16 years old - propagator, check if it is working, and try to find a wide enough window-sill to prop it on. Then all I have to do is wait for my seed choice from the Cottage Garden Society seed exchange to arrive. Having just moved and inherited an overgrown weed-infested patch that needs some TLC, I've been impatiently waiting, with eager anticipation, for the postie to deliver all those lovely packets of seeds for days!

  10. Go for it! You can always reseed if they do not make it.
