I guess I am snowed in. It has not even been especially heavy, but when I drove back today I just made it up the hill and then as I approached my house, my car went into a slide. It was SO frightening. I lost complete control and my car slid down down down the hill and into the neighbours wall. Don't worry, nothing broken on either me or the car. By some complete miracle my car had no damage at all, simply because of the angle it came in at but I couldn't move it and it could have been so much worse. It wouldn't reverse back up the hill and in the end I had to go forward and let the car slowly slide to the left and back onto the road. It then went into freefall down the hill and, again, by some miracle there were no other cars parked on the road. At the bottom of the hill I managed to turn it around and slowly get it back to the top of the hill, roaring in first gear. I have dumped it now and daren't use it again until the snow is cleared. Sadly gritters never make it onto my road, so I will be busy with a shovel tomorrow morning. Luckily I don't really have to go anywhere - it's a good job!
The important part is that no-one was hurt and my car is fine. But I was a bit shaken up by the experience and had to have a glass of limoncello to calm my nerves, haha. The thing is that I probably need new tires. I was told on the last service that the tires would soon need replacing. It is somewhere that I need to find the money, because safety is worth way more than cash.
Holy cow, what a scary experience! I've slipped on ice before in my car and it's very scary, even if you're not going very fast!
ReplyDeleteI find gritted roads fine, but the farmers "clear" the roads near us by driving their tractors over it - it doesn't get rid of the snow, it just compacts it into a big ice sheet!
We get snow tires on our cars in the winter, they grip much better. I feel so sorry for you all over there, we are used to it but it's hard for you guys. Stay safe.

This must have been frightening at the time. Do you have chains to attach to your wheels?
ReplyDeleteGosh Dan, glad you are okay! Cheers Judy xx
ReplyDeletevery Frightening for you!your so lucky the Car was'nt damaged, and you or anyone else was not hurt!
ReplyDeleteI'm so scared of driving on ice... I'm glad you were okay! Glad the car is still driveable!
ReplyDeleteVery scary! So glad you and your car are okay!
ReplyDeleteoh heck! glad you are ok, I'm sure you have plenty of shopping and stay warm, take care - froogs xx
ReplyDeleteOh dear, that's scary. Glad you and car are ok. Can you leave it in a quiet road at the bottom of the hill, and walk up and down when there is snow and ice about? Have you got a bus service into town. My car stays on the drive in slippery weather, even though I am on the flat, I won't risk it. It took me half an hour once to inch my way down an icy hill in a 40 tonne truck. I kept steering into the kerb to stop myself from slithering down to the bottom. Look after yourself. Lots of love, Ilona
ReplyDeleteI dread the coming of snow and ice for that very reason - it might look nice but ... glad you and your car survived.
ReplyDeleteGlad you and your car both escaped unscathed :-)
ReplyDeleteI have been in a similar boat before. It's horrible and like everything happens in slow motion! I have part worn tyres for my car - they're alot cheaper but still have most of the tyre's life left in them. I quizzed the garage for ages before making that decision. Might be worth considering though?
ReplyDeleteIf you do get new tyres, worth getting snow tyres on the front and the best out of the existing tyres put on the back. When the weather gets better you then have snow tyres took off and replace front, but still have snow tyres for next year.
ReplyDeleteThats really scary, its horrible when you have no control over your car when you are sliding on ice, you just have to hope for the best that you come to a stand still without hitting anything! Im really nervous of driving in bad weather that I left me car in the drive yesterday and walked into the town centre and back again with all the shopping. The shopping was heaving and it was a good walk, I wasnt prepare to pay the bus fare so had to make do though its not too bad here today.
ReplyDeleteTake care x
put the fire on and turn your back on the snowy world!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteNasty experience! Glad you are here to tell the tale, though.
ReplyDeleteSo glad that you, the car, and the neighbor's wall all survived the such a serious slide. Glad you're recuperating! At least now you know what snowy/icy conditions are there and you can plan accordingly. My first major slide didn't end as well, but now I know which roads are to be avoided in bad weather. I live on a private road - no plows, no salt. Thankfully, I live near the end of the road near the main street and, like you, I don't always have places I need to go in winter.
ReplyDeleteGlad you and everything else is okay. Many years ago when I lived in Lincoln, we had a freak snow storm in May, blizzard fashion and completely out the blue. I was on my way to work, (in a thin dress and coat like you do in Summer) walking along the bottom of a very steep road. I heard a siren wailing at the top and watched in horror (the drivers face matched my own) as it slithered sideways, round and round in a slow pirouette down the hill. I was transfixed. It missed me by a couple of feet as I jumped out the way at the last minute. It came to a halt in the middle of a four road junction, hitting nothing and no-one in the process. A miracle!
ReplyDeleteGlad you're okay Dan. I skidded on black ice on the dual carriageway one morning - very scary as it came just weeks after a 70mph accident on the motorway. Miraculously both me and the car were unscathed in each - despite swerving from the middle to the fast lane for quite a distance as I tried to control the car after some idiot cut me up.The police did have to stop the traffic on the M6 on a Friday afternoon to get me off the central reservation though, where thankfully deep mud slowed the car to a halt before I hit the barriers.
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOSH!! I am just getting caught up on blogs after the blogger issues I had and I just saw this post. I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'm glad it turned out OK for you. Now go get some hot chocolate, stay warm and watch the snowy world go by.
