Man's best friend.

This weekend I agreed to look after my friends 2 dogs. Remember the puppies I helped deliver (when I say helped, I mean I made cups of tea while other people did 'stuff') well they are all long gone to good new homes, except one. So I had mum and daughter to stay with me in 5 star chez Dan luxury.

How does anyone get anything done when they have a dog?

Now I accept that one of them is very young and curious and the other one is probably home sick, but the two of them follow me every single second of every single hour. I went to make a cup of tea and they stick to me like extra shadows; go to the loo with an audience. It is very endearing and they are both beautiful, but it did sort of hamper my progress. I gave up on taking advantage of the surprisingly good weather yesterday by doing some weeding. No way was that going to happen, first one of them took my trowel (thought it was some weird stick I think) while the other one did a poo and tried to eat it.

So we came inside and decided to watch a film. The dogs wanted to watch 'the incredible journey' but instead we watched the harrowing and tear jerking 1996 film version of The Crucible. We all enjoyed it and cried a bit.

This morning I awoke with a dogs bum in my face and another one scratching over my mouth. We had a lovely bracing walk (good weather gone) at 6.30 this morning and I washed my bedding, the washing machine being a source of endless interest for my two new furry canine friends. I shut them in while I put the washing on the line and they steamed up the glass with their nose pressed against the door, watching my every move. The only time they settle is when I sit down, although even that is a little hampered by the fact that they both want to sit on my knee at the same time. Finally, we are now settled on the sofa, we may watch another film....

I've loved every second of it :-)

  3. I think they are doing a very good job of looking after you. Making sure you don't work too hard by weeding, making sure you wake up at a reasonable hour and then get your daily exercise, and finally ensuring that you sit down whilst they give you a cuddle to make you feel loved!

  6. I laughed til I cried reading this post, you have such a way with words. When we visit my son and his girlfriend, I find it disconcerting having a dog (and now dogs) watching everything I eat and do. They are so curious, just like babies. At least they don't attempt to sit on my knee, or on my face. Mind you they change colour during a walk, start out black/brown and white, end up black or brown by the time they've investigated and rolled in puddles.

  7. The impact of having animals in the house is huge, even if they are only visiting for a while. When my grandkitty comes to stay I get very little done - I think it would be wrong to move if he has decided to curl up on my lap for a snooze. Definitely no bums in faces though - he sleeps in another room or we'd be constantly woken by him creeping under the covers to attack our feet.

  8. I have an independent cat who snoozes most of the day and demands food much of the little that's left, the rest of the time she needs my very full attention - she calls me her minion :) The photo of the two watching telly is priceless! Elizabeth

  9. I have to agree with Scarlet on this one! Our cat marmalade isnt allowed to roam the house when we go to bed, she sleeps in her bed in the kitchen but given half a chance she'd be under the duvet and you would have a furry face on the pillow with you.

  10. Thank you - and the dogs - for making me laugh. They have obviously taken to you. Pity you have to go off now and then or I think they could become permanent?

  11. Animals are a constant source of amusement. I have a very talkative cat. He follows me around the house like an insecure puppy. Your two visitors felt insecure without your constant attention, that`s why they followed your every move. There is not a dull moment in our lives if we share it with an animal.

    1. P.S. Nearly forgot to meantion this. Animals make excellent alarm clocks, lol. My Salem wakes me just before the actual alarm goes off. He stands up by my side of the bed and gently pads my face. If I don`t react he will climb onto the bed and bite my nose.

  17. I guess this is why I have two dogs - constant companionship and worship.
Mind you I have four cats too, and their indifference and aloofness helps balance it all out.
Enjoying reading back on your blog - greetings from an ex Brit living way down under in New Zealand.
