Paradox of our Age

Some of you may have read this before, I hadn't. I read it for the first time the other day on Gavin's excellent blog which you can find here. Well worth a visit.

It is quite a sad reflection of modern civilization, but oh so true.

The Paradox of Our Age by The 14th Dalai Lama

We have bigger houses but smaller families;
More conveniences, but less time;
We have more degrees, but less sense;
More knowledge, but less judgment;
More experts, but more problems;
More medicines, but less healthiness;
We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbour.
We build more computers to hold more information to produce more copies than ever but have less communication.
We have become long on quantity, but short on quality.
These are times of fast foods but slow digestion;
Tall men but short character;
Steep profits but shallow relationships.
It's a time when there is much in the window, but nothing in the room.

  1. Makes complete and utter sense to me. Reckon it's long past the time to turn the clock back and become normal again.

  2. Just as you say, Dani: time to turn the clock back a bit.
    All going well so far miss Piggy Bank, thank you, fingers crossed. The survey hurdle is out of the way, anyway. I am off to the North tomorrow for a second viewing on the cottage I am interested in. Let's see if I still like it as much or more second time around.

  3. Must have been me as I am reading you okay today.
    As for 'The paradox of our age' perfecty true but while money rules the world sadly nothing will change.
    I remember when the world was not as bad as this, when all front doors were left unlocked and life was simpler but it will take a lot to get that back.
    It makes me so sad....
