A celebration of roses.

Thank you everyone for my birthday wishes yesterday (and happy birthday today to MTVA)
I had a lovely day, someone at work had baked me a victoria sponge which we all ate when I got there and then the people I am staying with had made me a cake last night as well! Lucky and well fed man yesterday.

Last weekend, when I was home, my mum came with a beautiful rose to plant in the garden for my birthday present. It was a David Austen Tess of the D'Urbevilles rose, which is a beautiful crimson English rose, with a scent. It was such a healthy looking specimin and we put it in the ground straight away as the weather was so nice.

I think that this is one of the nicest presents I could ever have received, something that will be around for years and years hopefully and something that I will remember that my mum gave me for my 39th birthday, in the year I moved to the house. I absolutely love roses and have planted 4 including this one, since I arrived, one climber which seems to have taken and has started growing. This is a Zepherine Drouhin and should provide deep pink/red flowers.

Also a yellow rose bush, Golden Wedding I think that it was called, which I have planted at the front and should produce yellow roses:

There is a 4th which I didn't photograph because it isn't doing very well - it was a very cheap one from lidl and I think that in this instance I am getting what I paid for because it looks like a tiny dead twig at the moment, still, you never know, it may take and surprise us all.

Today I have a day off and I plan on doing very little. I would love to be gardening, but that is not to be. I will go for a walk later as the weather seems very nice.

I hope you are all enjoying your weekend, what are you up to?

  1. Gardening and watching the weather anxiously as I have washing on the line for the first time this week and grey clouds are a-coming!

  2. I know it's late but happy birthday for yesterday. I absolutely adore roses. I am unsure of their names but I just love their form and scent as well as the colours. My gran used to grow them, for the same reasons I think. I have had mine for years and I love to draw them. One day I may put my drawings on here. xxx

  3. I love roses too - we bought a rose called 'Silver Wedding' for our 25th wedding anniversary 3 years ago. It's at the allotment and has done really well but I'm planning on bringing it home, along with my Dad's rose which he planted in 1977 and which has accompanied me to my other houses and needs to be here with me. I'm cooking up a storm today - coffee and walnut buns, vanilla buns, flapjack, swiss roll, bread, chili, shepherd's pie, lots of vege mince and veg pies for KL. When that's done I have a lot of things to list on ebay.J's at the allotment planting more potatoes and onions and loads of peas that we've been waiting to get into the ground. Have a lovely weekend and enjoy your walk.

    1. I think roses are such a great gift, for anyone, but especially people who like to garden. The smell in your kitchen must have been amazing yesterday.

    1. Hope you are feeling better. But you can't go wrong if Jessica Fletcher is solving a murder, nice way to spend an afternoon.

  6. Been visiting a local farmersmarket to stock up on venison shanks, then spend a lovely morning with my neighbour and friend. We went to a local organic farm to get some nice eggs and had a lovely cup of tea with coffee cake in their farm shop. Back home to do some laundry and to bake a rhubarb cake for our weekend. Went for a lovely dinner with DB at a local polish restaurant. Had a great day.

  7. what am I up to?
watching that Celebrity opera conductor programme on bbc2
    did you catch it?

    1. I did catch it, although I am one behind, so only watched the first one. It was surprisingly good, because I fully expected to hate it. Thankfully, they have real top quality professionals to judge and mentor them rather than another z list celebrity with scant knowledge like La Jenkins. Makes a difference.

  8. Ah, roses, such a beautiful flower (and when they are fragrant, amazing). What a thoughtful gift from your Mom. Awesome!

  9. Roses certainly are something to celebrate, especially the fragrant ones. I picked a small assortment of them from my garden yesterday, one of my most favorite things to do, and am enjoying them on the kitchen window sill. And thank you for the birthday wish, that was so sweet of you!
