I am lucky. While I have been working in London and continue to for the next 6 and a half weeks I am staying with good and very kind friends. They have opened their home to me and given me their spare room and this makes such a difference to me, not only am I living with friends, but I am looked after and it is this that is allowing me to continue to work in London when I have a contract.
Things are going well, but I have a terrible cold. I have been fine and so well while I was living in my home, for months, but within 10 days of being in London I came down with a sore throat that has now made me completely lose my voice. In my job, this is not really the best thing that could happen. I'm sure I probably caught it from someone on the tube.
Today I have a day off and I am spending it resting and keeping warm and not talking, in the hope of ridding myself of this so that by next week I am back on form. My opening night is 14th May, so no worries as I have weeks to recover yet.
I am keeping up with all your blogs when I manage to get myself online and that is keeping me sane while I live a slightly crazy lifestyle for a while.
That's all for now.
Feel better soon :) And have a good bowl of hot chicken soup - it really works LOL
ReplyDeleteThank you, I am at the streaming stage now.
DeleteGet well soon x I had it last week and am just feeling better now 9 days later.
ReplyDeletecrikey, I hope it doesn't take that long!
DeleteI suspect you have been "sucking face" with some other thespian, thats how you've lost your voice..... tube indeed!!!
ReplyDeleteget well soon!
John, if only that were true! (Having said that, I do get a snog in this opera - just not with my first choice.)
DeleteIf your sore throat keeps you awake at night, just before going to bed, gargle with whiskey or something similar, then swallow. It helps anesthetize your throat a little. Makes you gulp as well!
ReplyDeleteNice tip, I did keep awake last night with coughing as it happens.
DeleteSo sorry to hear you are unwell. Drink lots of ginger tea mixed with lemon juice and honey. That will soon sort that sore throat. Take care.xxxx
ReplyDeleteAnother good tip, I will get some tomorrow.
DeleteEek, sounds like a big prblem for an opera singer!! How are you finding London? Oppressive or interesting?
ReplyDeleteNice to be able to visit your friends though! :)
Honestly, my experience of London has been a passing through one so far. I get on a train to Charing Cross, get on a tube at Embankment and get off at Ravenscourt park and then reverse it in the evening. Not really 'done' anything in London (not really planning to). I would have to say that I am finding it oppressive really but not horrific.
DeleteIt's lovely to have very special friends, which you seem to have, looking after you while you are away from home. I hope you start to feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteS x x
Thank you, I am very lucky indeed.
DeleteGet well soon,
ReplyDeletewhat are you performing in (if im allowed to ask)
x
Thank you. I am singing Papageno in 'The Magic Flute' opening at the London South Bank.
DeleteGet well soon! I recommend you take some extra zinc every day whilst in London. I work in a hospital & I take extra zinc as surrounded by people obviously & germs when there are outbreaks & viruses. Seems to work for me. Hope things clear up soon. (Zinc may help you recover a bit quicker too.)
ReplyDeleteThank you, I will try that.
DeleteGet well soon Dan - Sod's law to get a sore throat now. I had viral tonsillitis a couple of weeks ago and that lasted a week or so- I rested as much as possible, drank plenty, avoided dairy and took paracetamol.
ReplyDeleteIt really is sod's law, yes, I have the whole weekend to rest, so I will be taking myself to bed this evening and not getting up til I feel like.
DeleteHope the throat gets better soon. My tips (for what they're worth) are - make sure you blow your nose whenever you go to the loo (nothing to do with the loo of course, it's just that you are in private then). This makes sure you are clearing out c*** regularly and every morning do the yoga 'lion' - just look it up on the internet. This again helps keep the throat clear. ; )
ReplyDelete!!!!!!
Can't guarantee that these will work for you but I haven't had a serious cold or cough for years.
Love from Mum
xx
Thanks mum, I like the tips, I have just looked up the lion. Fingers crossed it won't last beyond the weeekend.
DeleteI hope you are feeling better as each day passes. A swallow of honey seems to really help the throat, soothing it and I think honey has some healing properties.
ReplyDeleteSee what happens when we leave that clean country air! Hoping the time goes fast and soon you are home in your garden once again.
Yep, It is definitely healthier in the clean country air.
DeleteHi, just wanted to pop in and say how much I enjoyed your blog. I have read the whole story from the start today and it really is inspiring, it makes me want to put my house up for sale and do the same thing myself! Anyway, hope you feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you for that, I am so glad that you enjoyed reading it all. Thanks for commenting too. Look forward to seeing you around.
DeleteGet well soon! Incidentally, did you see Sunday's Countryfile about South Lancs, Pendle Hill, the witches etc? I rather enjoyed it, even though these days Countryfile is a bit like Blue Peter for adults! If you have access, you could catch up on I-Player while you recover. Anyway, stay warm and drink lots of hot drinks. x
ReplyDeleteI did! One of the walks over the hill opposite my house brings me to the Pennine Way in about 20 minutes, so I was very excited. It made me a bit home sick!
DeleteHope your feeling better soon Dan. Time passes so quickly you'll be back home before you know it : )
ReplyDeleteKaren x
Thank you, I am sure the weekend off will give me a good recovery time.
DeleteFirst I hope you feel better soon! I'm not sure what you have to be careful of to protect your voice, but Vitamin C and some Zinc, works wonders for me every time. Be well!
ReplyDeleteVitamin C and zinc is pretty good it seems. Thank for the kind words.
DeleteHope you are feeling better soon - resting does work.
