New purchase

I have been thinking about one of these for a very long time as it is recommended by so many of you, so I went to Argos today and got myself a Mini Oven. Seems perfect for heating a meal for one without wanting to put the big oven on. It was £40 but I had a £10 voucher from someone, so it cost me £30. I had a perfect spot for it above my large oven too.

So I tried it tonight, was a little worried that it might not come up to par, but no need to fear, I waited 5 minutes to heat up, but it was hot before that and I chopped up some potatoes to make wedges and put in a chicken breast. They were cooked beautifully and in slightly less time than the big oven. The power is 1300 as opposed to my large oven which is 2000 so it is uses about 40% less electricity which is good news. So now, when I am making a small meal just for me there is no need to wait for the big oven to heat up and to waste all that space. Hopefully the money I shelled out for the mini oven will come back to me in money I will save by using it.
I will look forward to trying other stuff in it now.

  2. What a brilliant idea! Just the ticket when cooking for just one person.
Well done you. And having purchased it with a voucher means an even better saving all around.

  3. I think a mini oven is brilliant! Definitely a mindful use of energy when cooking for one. It looks absolutely perfect in the space you already had too.
I am a new reader of your blog and I love it, you are very inspiring!

  4. Good result. I understand that a microwave oven uses as much electricity as one hotplate, but for less time of course. I'm not sure, but I think appliances generally use less electricity than built-in machinery. What do the other readers think?

  6. You know, here in the states, we call that a "toaster oven". They are great for cooking small batches of things. We have one at my office in our breakroom and we put a small pan of cookie dough in there and make cookies for the office. There are only six of us and it holds six nice cookies at once, ha.

    Good choice!

  7. I have just bought one of these. Perfect for just the two of us! I tend to batch cook it takes a cottage pie, lasagne, or home made faggots perfectly. I use Pyres glass dishes with the plastic lids to freeze our meals in and they fit perfectly on the oven. Roasted veg works well as do roast and baked potatoes. I hate microwaves so this is perfect. The grill is also really useful. Perfect purchase!

  8. I used one of these for a couple of years before I had saved enough to buy a proper cooker. I had bought myself a two-ring hotplate when I first moved in and a few months later when I was visiting my sister she mentioned she had a small oven in her cellar. Some of the looks I got on the eight-hour train journey back from France were hilarious - it was in a black plastic bag in a giant shopping bag held together with rope so that I'd be able to carry it as well as my ordinary bag. It was fantastic. The only problem being that the only space I had to keep it was on top of the washing machine and one day I made a quiche and left it resting on top of the oven to cool but forgot that I had switched the washing machine on a few minutes before. Went into the sitting room only to have to race back a few minutes later when I heard the crash. It looked like one of the nicest quiches I'd ever made, too. It was also really good for doing toasted sandwiches.

  9. I haven't had a full-sized oven for 2.5 years now, just a mini-oven which has 2 rings on top. It's definitely a fuel saver, and I can cook anything in it that I would in a full sized oven - bread, cakes, and Christmas dinner!

  10. Sounds good to me. If it cooks well, and only cost £30, it's win/win.

  14. I'm just watching re-runs of My Little Paris Kitchen and she cooks on a two ring hob and a little oven like this all the time, even catering for her 'mini restaurant' customers with them.

Yours should save you a fortune.

  15. I don't ever use my big oven. I have a Toaster Oven (what we call a Mini Oven here in the States) a electric griddle, an electric rice/pasta cooker, and a couple of Crock Pots.
