The Lord of the Hobbits.

As I wake up to another grey and foggy day, I realise just how much I am craving the sun. With our very poor British summer this year it seems an absolute age since I basked in a bit of warm sunlight and just a few days would lift the spirits in this dark month.

I was taken to the cinema last night to see The Hobbit. I have to admit that sometimes I find the cinema a weird experience, especially if it is very busy, people whispering and chatting in the dark (I am a sit in total silence sort of watcher) and others laughing at what seems to me to be totally inappropriate moments. Yesterday was mercifully quiet though, I suppose most people went to see films over Christmas instead. I must admit that I was a little bewildered as to why the director, Peter Jackson, felt the need to add a new sub-plot to an already action packed and interesting book and what was with the new, made up characters? The cynical side of me thought that maybe it was, indeed, to make the films longer so that he could get 2 films out of it and so increase the profit, but maybe I do him a huge injustice. But after 30 minutes of the film, when they had not yet left The Hobbit's house, there was a slight sense of drawing it out to epic proportions. Don't let it put you off, it is a jolly good watch, but with a sense of trying to make a more bucolic book into a drama the size of The Lord of the Rings.

  2. Yes, some sunshine would be nice. Although we have had 3 dry days (and this weekend is dry as well), it has been overcast. Every morning the roads and garden look like it has rained overnight. Guess no sun warmth to dry them out.

  3. Sending you sunshine from North Lincolnshire, it's lovely here this morning. I haven't been to the flix in yonks, nothing much showing that takes my fancy. Don't think I would like the hobbit.

'You was taken', hhhmmm, was that a date dare I ask? Tell me to mind my own business, ha ha.

  4. Like you I like to sit in silence when watching a film, so struggle with the fact that others feel the need to talk throughout. Also people are so dirty chucking sweet wrappers, popcorn and the like all over the place, leaving it for others to clear up. I am ok with lack of sunshine until end January but find February too much but at least we are on the right side of the winter solstice.

  5. I convinced my 17 year old grandaughter to go with me to see The Hobbit. We both loved the movie. Faiery tales lift my heart. They take you far and away from the hum drum....magic! My only complaint is having to wait the long times between each installment! I'm 64 so this is the child in me I'm so happy I still have :)

  6. New years day was very sunny here in Brighton, but we are back to the old grey matter and drizzly rain, now. I think we all have seen enough grey skies to last for a while. Could certainly do with brighter days ahead!
Can`t even recall the last time I went to the cinema. Must have been in the early years of my kids childhood. That would make it good 22-25 years back, I guess. That new Hobbit film does not interest me at all. I`ve seen a few clips as pre-view on the TV and I`m not happy with the way everyone in the film seems to speak in american accents. Just doesn`t sit right with me. I used to sit and watch all the other episodes of lord of the rings on the TV, as my eldest son used to be so into this stuff, but would not pay out to go and watch any of it in the cinema. I don`t even watch TV much nowadays. Far too busy most days pottering around my home, then enjoy my blogging in the evenings, so really don`t worry about any films that might be shown. I prefer to see documentaries about travel or some cookery program. Apart from that I can quite easily do without TV, too. Off to cook a delicious butternut squash soup now, hoping the weather will brighten later for me to take a run on the bycicle.

  8. I LOVE going to the cinema but I also like to sit silently and watch. I don't see what others find so important that they need to discuss throughout the movie. Saw "Life of Pi" today, really enjoyed it! Weather here has been EXTREMELY hot, 44 degrees C yesterday but cooler today, more hot hot hot weather forecast for next week! Yuk!

  9. No sunshine here either. I've felt so down I actually purchased a daylight bulb online to see if that lifts my spirits any. Just waiting for delivery now. My daughter went to see The Hobbit and was really impressed. I don't know if she is right or not, but she said Peter Jackson had added some of the information about this story from the Silmarillon to expand the plot line and include more detail, and was impressed that he had done so. Perhaps those were the bits that you found confusing?........but then what do I know, I've not read the Silmarillon or seen the film of the Hobbit, and I think I'll have to wait for it to come out on DVD now.

  10. Happy New Year Dan.

I also prefer silence at the cinema so I had to really prepare myself when I went to see The Hobbit recently. I loved it and was engrossed from the start. Admittedly I didn't ever read the book so I didn't have any particular expectations. But hubby has and he enjoyed it too.

I can't wait for the next one!

  12. I havent been to the cinema in years as as you say other people spoilt it for me. Plus now in the wilds of Aberdeenshire its a trek to get to the cinema so we wait for the dvd. You have so worried me. I read the Hobbit when I was 11 and many times since. Please dont say they have spoiled it. I was so looking forward to seeing it!

  13. The last time I went to the cinema the seats were so uncomfortable that I couldn't wait to get home.
Bright sunshine here, almost like a warm spring day.
    Love from Mum

  14. I saw the movie two weeks ago here in Kansas and thought the same thing! Tooo drawn-out, especially the chase through the mountain. I was finally squirming in my seat. And I think Bilbo was a tad too meek, too. I also like to have quiet so I can hear and get "into the movie".
